Bollywood missing at Pakistani film fest

Pakistan’s internationally recognized Kara Film Festival began on Wednesday under a cloud of uncertainty over the screening of several scheduled Indian films and the attendance of Indian delegates. Since an 2003, even before the start of the peace process, Bollywood stars, both filmmakers and actors, and films have been a big draw at the film festival, which is held in Karachi.
The last time the festival was held in December 2006, the entire “Omkara” cast showed up, adding much glitz and glamour to the event.
This year, the Mumbai attacks have taken their toll on the festival, which had become quite the showcase for the growing networks between the Indian and Pakistani film industries.
As many as 30 Indian films, including documentaries, shorts and feature films, have been listed for the 11-day festival. While the Indian documentaries and shorts will be shown, the organisers said they were not certain if any of the seven scheduled feature films would make it to the festival.
The only Indian delegates expected are two old-faithfuls Mahesh Bhatt and Nandita Das, whose directorial debut “Firaq” is listed in the schedule. But even their presence is uncertain.
“We hope to show at least two of the seven films, Chaurahey and Firaq, but nothing is certain. Nandita [Das] is facing some problems with her company about bringing the film here,” said Hassan Zaidi, who heads Kara Film Society, the organisers of the film festival.
